Dusty had lain awake for hours, his thoughts divided about equally between cattle and women, or rather a woman. He was remembering an old dream, a vision of the ranch he would one day own. It was something tried not to think about too often lest he find his present situation unbearable, but Abigail’s letter had brought it all back to him. He’d been planning for it, saving for it all his adult life, knowing that his destiny must be more than just living out his days as someone else’s foreman. The ranch would be in West Texas, or maybe Montana or Wyoming or Colorado or... He’d never felt compelled to make a final decision, trusting that when the time came, he’d make a good choice. He’d start small and build, maybe get some backing from back east or even Europe. Lots of folks were doing that. He’d breed Herefords, too, maybe mix them with Longhorns to get the best of both breeds. Then he’d build a house, a stone house, with lots of rooms, a house fit for a queen, and then he’d marry. His wife would be beautiful and smart and, oh, hell, he thought bitterly, she’d be, if he had any power to make her so, just like Priscilla Bedford, or he’d never even be able to look at her. Why, oh why, he asked himself for the thousandth time, had he met her now? If only he’d met her five years from now, when he would have been a successful rancher, the kind of man she deserved.

Time and again he forced his thoughts back to plans for his ranch, and each time he ended up back at the same question, the question for which there was no answer. He was wrestling with it once again when he heard the school bell clanging in the distance. It took a moment for him to recognize the sound and another moment for the significance to register. Of course! Priscilla was in trouble! In an instant he was on his feet, pulling on his jeans, stomping into his boots, his hat somehow automatically on his head. Reaching for his rifle, he impulsively changed his mind and grabbed the gunbelt he seldom wore, strapping it hastily around his hips. The Colt .45 slipped easily from the holster, and as he checked the loads, the other men in the bunkhouse began to stir, the insistent bell finally disturbing their sleep.

“What’s goin’ on?” asked Curly groggily.

“Trouble at the school,” Dusty called over his shoulder as he left the building. Snatching a halter from the outside wall, he ran to the barn and caught up Lady. Jumping on her bare back, he raced toward the still-ringing bell.

Priscilla clutched frantically at the rope, pulling and pulling with every fiber of her being, ringing and ringing and ringing and still no one came. Where could they all be? It had been hours and hours. Her arms ached with the effort and still no one came. Were
